On the effect of overshooting as predicted by the modelling of the pre-main sequence evolution of a 2 solar-mass star

چکیده
We discuss the effects of convective overshooting in the PMS evolution of intermediate mass stars, by analysing in detail the early evolution towards the main sequence of a 2 M⊙ stellar model. These effects can be extremely important in the end of the PMS, when the abundances in CNO elements approach the equilibrium in the centre. We provide a possible physical explanation on why a moderate amount of overshooting produces, as the star approaches the ZAMS, an extra loop in the evolutionary tracks on the HR diagram. An interesting feature is that there is a very well defined amount of overshooting (for a given stellar mass and chemical composition) beyond which a loop is produced. For smaller amounts of overshooting such a loop does not take place and the evolutionary tracks are similar to the ones obtained by Iben (1965). The amount of overshooting needed to produce the loop decreases with stellar mass. We discuss the underlining physical reasons for the behaviour predicted by the evolution models and argue that it provides a crucial observational test for convective overshooting in the core of intermediate mass stars.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF COSMIONS ON THE STABILITY OF MAIN SEQUENCE STELLAR CORES
We have studied the effect of hypothetical Cosmions on the core stability of main sequence stars (of populations I and II). Cosmions, with a mass of 4-10 Gev/c2 and a scattering cross section with nucleons of approximately 10-36 cm2 could prevail in transporting heat in the stellar cores. Raby [17] showed the existence of a local thermal instability caused by the presence of Cosmions in the sol...

We compare eighteen binary systems with precisely determined radii and masses from 23 to 1.1 M⊙, and stellar evolution models produced with our newly revised code TYCHO. “Overshooting” and rotational mixing were suppressed in order to establish a baseline for isolating these and other hydrodynamic effects. Acceptable coeval fits are found for sixteen pairs without optimizing for heavy element o...
متن کاملThe solar neighbourhood HR diagram as a quantitative test for evolutionary time scales
The HIPPARCOS parallaxes have provided us with a precise HR diagram (HRD) of the solar neighbourhood, complete within certain limits. The scope of this work is a study of the stellar population densities in characteristic regions of the HRD to test stellar evolutionary time scales. We examine two HRDs (Mv ≤ 4.0), both based on the single-star entries of the HIPPARCOS catalogue. One is constrain...
متن کاملThe role of the time step and overshooting in the modelling of PMS evolution: the case of EK Cephei
EK Cephei (HD 206821) is a unique candidate to test predictions based on stellar evolutionary models. It is a double-lined detached eclipsing binary system with accurate absolute dimensions available and a precise determination of the metallicity. Most importantly for our work, its low mass (1.12 M⊙) component appears to be in the pre-main sequence (PMS) phase. We have produced detailed evoluti...
